Avenged Sevenfold got hacked over the weekend, and it's an example of how using A.I. and "deepfake" technology could be a nightmare for musicians.
Someone hacked into the band's Trax podcast feed on Sunday and posted an entry called "Important Announcement" where frontman M. Shadows announced that the band was canceling their upcoming appearances at Welcome to Rockville and Sonic Temple so they could continue work on their new album. But it wasn't the real M. Shadows -- it was someone suing A.I. technology to make a very close copy of his speaking voice.
The podcast feed automatically posted to the band's social media, so the real M. Shadows quickly discovered they'd been hacked. He tweeted "Yikes. This is not true. We are still playing. Getting to the bottom of this." He then tweeted a link to the since deleted podcast and wrote "Literally walking in the streets of Mexico and listening to this. What the actual [heck] -- NOT ME!"
