SAMMY HAGAR: 30 Years Gone
Today (Tuesday), June 16th, marks the 30th anniversary of Van Halen parting ways with their second singer, Sammy Hagar. Following the death of manager Ed Leffler, the band signed with Rush manager Ray Danniels, who, at the time, was Alex Van Halen's brother-in-law. He wanted them to do a "best of" album, which Hagar wanted no part of. At the same time, they were asked to contribute a song to the soundtrack of the movie Twister. Hagar agreed, but when it was decided that one song would be featured on the soundtrack and another they recorded would go on the hits album, he wasn't pleased. This was compounded by the fact that the band was recording another new song for the hits album with former singer David Lee Roth. Things then came to a head on Sunday, June 16th. Sam recalls "Eddie calls me up -- it was actually on Father's Day in the morning -- he says, 'We gotta talk man.' 'cause he felt guilty I guess. I don't blame him. He said, 'You never do what we want you to do. You're always doing whatever you want to do, and you have never been cooperative.' I'm going, 'Wait a minute. We've co-wrote every song this band has done since 1986. We have a great writing relationship. What do you mean I never do what you guys want me to do? You know, as far as I'm concerned, we've done everything right.' You know, it's like this is the first I've heard about this. And he said, 'So I've had it and I just went back and got David Lee Roth in the band.' And I just freaked out. That's how the whole thing happened. I thought this is the biggest betrayal I've ever seen."
News of the split broke in July that year with Hagar saying he was fired and Eddie Van Halen
claiming he quit. In September, Van Halen appeared on the MTV Video Music Awards with Roth. However, Roth's antics that night pissed off Eddie and the reunion came to a grinding halt. Best Of - Volume 1 was released in October 1996, and then the band turned their attention to Gary Cherone from Extreme, who were also managed by Ray Danniels. Cherone
recorded one album with the band, 1998's Van Halen III, before leaving in 1999. Hagar and Van Halen patched things up for a 2004 reunion tour, but that ended with Sammy and Eddie at each other's throats due to Eddie's drinking. They finally made peace in early 2020, 10 months before Eddie passed from cancer at the age of 65. In all, Hagar and Van Halen recorded four studio albums and one live collection.
LED ZEPPELIN: Adamant to Share Their "Experience"
Led Zeppelin are still pushing to trademark "Led Zeppelin Experience" in the U.S. After their application was rejected last December by the U.S. Trademark and Patent Office, explaining that it's "confusingly similar to the registered mark ‘Led Zeppelin.'," their legal team once again filed paperwork with the U.S. government earlier this month. In this filing they argue that because the band’s existing trademark for its name and the new application for “The Led Zeppelin Experience” come from the same company, the provisional refusal should be withdrawn. While it's not known exactly what the "Experience" will be, there's been speculation that it will be a touring exhibit of their memorabilia, similar to what The Rolling Stones and Pink Floyd did.
In 2018, the late John Bonham's son Jason Bonham was touring as Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Experience when the band asked him to no longer use Experience. "They have plans for the terminology, Led Zeppelin Experience. And I was like, 'Um, okay, but I need to keep the logo, JBLZE.' One, I have the tag on my car, and two, I have a huge backdrop that I paid for last year. For me it's about the music. So the name of it -- I just wanted to keep the logo. So I said, 'I got it. Jason Bonham's Led Zeppelin Evening.' I don't know what they have planned, but I said, 'Okay, I will clear the way so they can do what they wish.'" In 2018, Zeppelin and Jason's mom Pat set up a UK business named Company 2018, which carries out “activities of exhibition and fair organizers.” They also own trademarks for “The Led Zeppelin Experience” in the U.K. and Europe. They're due to expire in November 2027.
GREGG ALLMAN: Hitting the Big Screens
After premieres in New York and Macon, Georgia, the Gregg Allman documentary, The Music of My Soul, will open in theaters this Wednesday. Having been diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2012, he and his manager, Michael Lehman, discussed how to handle his legacy, saying that one of the things they discussed was the documentary. "We all knew the songbook. We all knew the rock star. But no one really knew that shy, southern, wounded, damaged, beautiful soul that a very few select got to see. And so we talked about the doc[umentary] and I shared with Gregg the importance of trying to show who he was as a human -- as someone that loved people, as someone that loved humanity in general and animals and plants. And so with that in mind, I interviewed and met with a bunch of directors and thankfully one of them was
James Keach." Lehman says Keach's treatment was "really a story of brothers and brotherhood.” Gregg Allman was 69 when he succumbed to liver cancer on May 27th, 2017.
For tickets and theater information go to GreggAllmanDocumentary.com. The film will be available to stream following its run in theaters -- details to be announced -- as well as on DVD and Blu-ray.
STEVIE NICKS: Edge of Saltiness
Stevie Nicks is a little ticked at country singer Keith Urban. The reason is because he asked fellow country artist Little Big Town to join him on his cover of Walter Egan's "Magnet and Steel" on Flow State, his new album of mostly yacht rock covers. Urban tells Billboard, "Waddy Wachtel is a good friend of mine, and he plays in Stevie's band. I sent Waddy the record, he played it for Stevie, and he sent me a text: 'Stevie’s very angry that she wasn’t asked to sing on the song with you.' I’m like, 'Oh my god, that’s fantastic!' So, of course, she’s listening to Little Big Town sing her part that she originally did." Ironically, Walter Egan left Stevie out of the video he did for the song. Among the other songs Urban covered are "Steal Away", "Baby Come Back", "Just the Two of Us", "On and On", "How Much I Feel", "Summer Breeze", and "I Just Wanna Stop".
BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN: Apologizes to Bono
Bono and Bruce Springsteen came together Saturday in New York at the Tribeca Festival. The
U2 singer, who inducted Springsteen into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1999, presented him this time with the Harry Belafonte Voices for Social Justice Award, followed by a Q&A session.
Bono said, “Bruce made poetry from the voices of the people and set that poetry to music. We honor him tonight as a musician and poet and as an activist and a patriot.” But Springsteen slightly disagreed, saying, “I don’t even really consider myself an activist. I’m a little embarrassed to get this award tonight cause I feel like at best I’m a concerned citizen.
“What do I do, you know, I sing my songs, I say a few things and wish for the best. There’s so many people … who do so much more than I do” as he pointed to Bono. Springsteen also took advantage of their time together to apologize to Bono for not allowing him to use his 2008 song “Girls in Their Summer Clothes” for a Gap ad in conjunction with Bono’s (RED) campaign.
“That was a big mistake,” said Springsteen. “That was just a song that, I love that song. Damn it, I still think back: ‘Bono asked you to put this thing on a commercial on television.’ I should have done it! People would hear it like a hit, you know? So I have to apologize.” Springsteen then performed with Patti Smith and Bono, doing Patti's "People Have the Power." And then, like most events Springsteen has participated in over the past year, he closed the night with an acoustic version of "Land of Hope and Dreams".

Rod Stewart Slammed For Attending World Cup Game After Canceling Show Due To "Health Reasons"
Rod Stewart backed out of his show in Chula Vista, California Friday, letting fans know just 45 minutes before showtime that he was unable to perform due to health reasons. On his Instagram Stories, his team posted that "on the advice of his doctors and following a diagnosis of an acute upper respiratory infection that has resulted in laryngitis, he is unable to take the stage this evening." The singer later posted, "Following treatment, I'm feeling much better, but my voice is not. I'm very disappointed and sincerely apologise for any inconvenience to my fans. The next day, Rod posted a video on Instagram of him on his private jet flying cross country to take in the World Cup. Blink-182 marked the 25th anniversary of their landmark 2001 album "Take Off Your Pants and Jacket" on Friday by releasing an expanded edition via Geffen Records. The new version pairs the original 13-track album with six bonus songs, jokingly called "boner tracks" by the band, that originally appeared as hidden tracks scattered across three different physical editions of the album…versions identified by the airplane, pants, and jacket symbols on the cover. The six songs have never before appeared together on a single release or been available to stream in one place. A double-LP vinyl edition is also available for pre-order, with a randomly etched emblem on Side D as a nod to the original edition concept.
