'Tomorrow’s Monsters' Offers Solid Sci-Fi Thrills

In the mind-bending new sci-fi thriller podcast Tomorrow’s Monsters, John Boyega (Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Attack the Block) plays Jack Locke, a con man with a mission: To infiltrate the Silicon Valley bodyhacking startup NextCorp, led by enigmatic CEO Max Fuller (played by Emmy-winning actor Darren Criss). NextCorp is secretly working on a new drug called “Shut-Eye” that eliminates the need for sleep, but “during human trials, the subjects walked away changed. Damaged. And several of them are already dead – including my brother,” Jack tells us. The official cause of death was suicide, but Jack knows his brother better than that. In this episode, his quest for the truth leads him to take a job as Fuller’s assistant; he meets the biggest names at NextCorp, receives a disturbing clue, and realizes that he’s being followed.

Jack doesn’t sleep the night before he starts his job at NextCorp, because he wants to avoid his horrifying night terrors: Terrible visions of his brother, still bloody from being thrown out a thirteenth-story window, tapping on his window. He meets all the big names at NextCorp, including Finn Connelly and Eddie Bender, the staff physician who will “oversee the next round of human trials.” Jack says he wasn’t aware there was a first human trial, and Finn replies casually, “Well, it wasn’t entirely successful. You don’t hear about the unsuccessful ones, do you?”

Jack describes his weeks of tedious, “intern-level” work for Fuller, saying he was starting to question what he could really accomplish. “That’s when I got the video.” We hear Dr. Reynolds in the footage, describing the disturbing results of the drug’s animal trials: Test rats clawing at their cages, attacking themselves and each other, even eating each other. “I am terminating this round of testing,” Dr. Reynolds says, her voice wobbling with emotion. “I’ve never seen anything like this.” If this is what happened to the rats, how did the company ever get permission to test on humans? Jack wonders. Superbly written and performed, this scripted sci-fi thriller promises to become one of your new favorite shows; follow along with Jack as he uncovers the terrifying truth about Shut-Eye, NextCorp, and Max Fuller himself on Tomorrow’s Monsters.
